Canada’s national para ice hockey team is heading into the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milano-Cortina with renewed confidence, a strong leadership core, and one clear objective: reclaim the Paralympic gold medal.
After nearly two decades without a Paralympic title — Canada’s last gold came in 2006 — the team believes its blend of experience, resilience, and unity could finally tip the balance in its favour. Head coach Boris Rybalka says the squad has the talent and mindset needed to compete with the best in the world.
“We can be the best team in the world on any given night,” Rybalka said, highlighting the team’s belief heading into the tournament.
A Rivalry That Fuels Canada’s Drive
For Canada’s para ice hockey players, matchups against the United States carry extra weight. The rivalry has defined much of the sport’s recent history, with the Americans winning the last four Paralympic finals.
Canada’s motivation was further intensified by a 6–1 loss to the United States at the 2025 World Para Hockey Championship. However, that defeat followed a major milestone: Canada’s 2–1 victory over the U.S. at the 2024 world championship, which secured the program’s first world title since 2017.
Rather than shake the team’s confidence, the recent setback strengthened its determination.
“If anything, that loss will inspire us to continue to bring our best every day until it’s time to redeem ourselves,” said veteran forward Dominic Cozzolino.
Strong Start at the 2026 Paralympics
Canada has already demonstrated its competitive edge at the Milano-Cortina Games. The team opened the preliminary round with an undefeated record, finishing 3–0 in Pool B.
A 4–1 win over Czechia secured top spot in the group and set up a semifinal matchup against China. The victory highlighted Canada’s depth and special teams, with the power play proving particularly effective.
With momentum building, Canada now finds itself in prime position to challenge for the gold medal.
Tyler McGregor’s Leadership Evolution
At the heart of Canada’s success is captain Tyler McGregor, who has led the team since 2019. The forward from Forest, Ontario has grown into the role over time, learning that authentic leadership is key to guiding the team.
Early in his captaincy, McGregor admitted he placed too much pressure on himself to lead perfectly. Over the years, however, he discovered that the most effective approach was simply to be himself while striving to improve every day.
“Relentlessly pursuing a better version of myself both on and off the ice,” he said, has become his guiding philosophy.
McGregor credits teammates and staff for helping him grow into the role, emphasizing that leadership within the team is shared among several strong voices.
“My job as captain is pretty easy at this point,” he said. “I’m surrounded by exceptional leaders, and together we guide this team.”
Coach Rybalka praised McGregor’s influence on the squad, saying the captain embodies what the program calls “the Canadian way” — a style built on determination, teamwork, and composure.
Composure and Patience Key to Success
According to McGregor, one of the most important lessons he has learned as captain is the value of patience and composure. Early on, he was often critical of himself and others, but experience has helped him understand the importance of trusting the process.
Now, he views those qualities as essential to leading Canada through high-pressure moments on the Paralympic stage.
As Canada prepares for the knockout rounds in Milano-Cortina, the team remains focused on one goal: proving that its years of hard work and perseverance can finally deliver Paralympic gold once again.
