FIFA World Cup 2026 — Group D, Matchday 2

Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California | Friday, June 19, 2026 | 11:00 PM ET / 8:00 PM PT

Watch in Canada: TSN (Bell Media)

Turkey and Paraguay arrive at Levi’s Stadium in a position neither can ignore: a second straight setback would leave their World Cup hopes hanging by the thinnest possible thread. Both teams opened Group D with losses, and the margin for error has already disappeared.

The stakes are easy to define even if the route forward is not. Turkey were beaten 2-0 by Australia in Vancouver, while Paraguay absorbed a 4-1 defeat against the United States in Los Angeles. With the USA and Australia sitting on three points, tonight’s meeting in Northern California is effectively a rescue mission for both sides.

A draw technically keeps the door open, but only barely. A victory, by contrast, would reshape the group and restore some belief before the final round of matches.

Turkey must turn control into goals

Turkey’s return to the World Cup carried real weight because this is only their third appearance on the sport’s biggest stage and their first since 2002, when they reached an unforgettable third-place finish. That history matters, because it explains why the pressure on Vincenzo Montella’s squad is so intense. They are not just trying to survive a difficult group; they are trying to prove that the program can again belong among the game’s serious competitors.

The raw talent is there. Arda Güler is the creative centerpiece, a young playmaker whose range, vision, and confidence give Turkey a match-winner from midfield. Kenan Yıldız provides direct running and dribbling from the front line, while Hakan Çalhanoğlu remains the experienced organizer who can dictate rhythm and deliver dangerous dead balls. On paper, that is a strong core. On the field against Australia, however, it produced possession without penetration and pressure without payoff.

Turkey’s opener revealed a familiar tournament danger: when the ball moves well but the final action lacks conviction, a team can look better than it actually is. Australia absorbed the pressure, stayed disciplined, and punished Turkey when the game opened up. Montella now has to decide whether to keep trusting the same structure or demand a sharper, more direct approach from the first whistle.

Paraguay arrive with resilience and bruises

Paraguay’s return to the World Cup is their first since 2010, and Gustavo Alfaro’s side earned that trip through a qualifying campaign built on grit, organization, and stubbornness. They collected enough results in South America to secure a place in the field, including notable home wins, and they did it with a team that rarely gives opponents comfortable space.

That reputation took a hit in their first match. The United States put Paraguay under immediate pressure, and the 4-1 score line reflected a difficult night rather than a narrow tactical failure. Paraguay did show some response after halftime, but by then the match had already slipped away. Alfaro now faces the challenge every defensive-minded coach hates most: restoring structure after a collapse while also finding a way to create more in attack.

Their main threat going forward is Julio Enciso, whose technical quality can change the tone of a match in a single sequence. Miguel Almirón adds experience and work rate, and Gustavo Gómez gives the back line authority. In midfield, Andrés Cubas is especially important because he brings the kind of ball-winning edge that can help Paraguay slow Turkey’s tempo. For Canadian viewers, his presence will be notable as he plays his club football with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

How the match is likely to unfold

This game is likely to be shaped by control, patience, and one decisive transition. Turkey want the ball and should have more of it. Paraguay want to deny space, delay attacks, and break forward before Turkey can recover their defensive shape. That contrast makes the opening hour especially important.

If Turkey move the ball quickly enough to release Güler and Yıldız between the lines, they can force Paraguay’s center backs into uncomfortable decisions. If Paraguay compress the field and win the first duels in midfield, they can turn the contest into a frustration test. The first team to score will gain a major edge, because neither side is in a position to chase recklessly.

Set pieces may also matter more than usual. Çalhanoğlu’s delivery gives Turkey a clear weapon, and their aerial presence should create at least a few dangerous moments. Paraguay, meanwhile, have enough size and toughness through Gómez and Fabián Balbuena to survive long stretches under pressure if they stay organized.

  1. Turkey must use early possession to create cleaner chances rather than settling for hopeful shots from distance.
  2. Paraguay need a calmer start than they produced against the United States, especially in defensive transition.
  3. Midfield battles involving Çalhanoğlu, Cubas, and Diego Gómez could determine who controls territory.
  4. The opening goal will likely decide whether this becomes a cautious chess match or a frantic chase.

The pressure is heavier on Turkey

Both teams need points, but Turkey carry a slightly heavier burden because their opener exposed how costly a second failure would be. They also enter the match with a sharper sense that they have more attacking upside than Paraguay. The challenge is converting that advantage into a score line that actually reflects it.

Paraguay are dangerous precisely because they are uncomfortable to play against when they are settled. Alfaro’s teams are usually built to suffer without panic, and that trait still matters here. Yet their earlier defensive issues suggest that if Turkey increase the pace and force repeated one-on-one situations, Paraguay may struggle to hold the line for ninety minutes.

Montella’s best path is probably the boldest one: push Güler into positions where he can receive facing goal, encourage Yıldız to attack space rather than only combine, and keep Çalhanoğlu involved as the controlling force behind them. If Turkey do those things, they should create enough to win.

Prediction: Turkey 2-1 Paraguay

Turkey have the better individual creators and the stronger need to respond, and that combination should be enough to carry them through a tense night. Paraguay can make the match uncomfortable, and Enciso is capable of forcing a nervous finish, but Turkey’s attacking ceiling is higher and should decide it.

What to watch in the closing stretch

If Turkey lead late, the final minutes could become a test of nerve rather than quality. Paraguay will push for one last opening, likely through direct play and quick service into Enciso or Almirón, while Turkey will try to keep the ball away from danger and use experience to slow the tempo.

If the score is level after an hour, expect both managers to make aggressive substitutions. At that point, fitness and bench depth may matter as much as tactics. For a game with elimination-level pressure, the late stages may decide not just the result, but which nation still has a realistic World Cup path left.

Kickoff is at 11:00 PM ET on TSN, or 8:00 PM PT for viewers on the West Coast, from Levi’s Stadium in the San Francisco Bay Area.
