A Stunning Admission After Months of Struggle

Nick Kyrgios has confirmed that he failed a drug test after a positive result for cocaine, calling the episode a sobering turning point during one of the toughest stretches of his career. The former Wimbledon finalist said the incident forced him to confront how far things had slipped after two years defined by injuries, limited matches, and mounting frustration.

The 31-year-old Australian has long been one of tennis’s most polarizing figures, and this latest development adds another difficult chapter to an already turbulent story. Since his breakout 2022 run to the Wimbledon final, where he lost to Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios has appeared in only a handful of tour-level singles matches and has won just two of them.

His ranking has fallen sharply as a result, leaving him at No. 919 in the world. The positive test was returned in June from a lower-level grass-court event in Mallorca, Spain, a detail that has now become central to the anti-doping case against him.

In his public statement, Kyrgios said, “I recently failed a drug test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine. I made a huge mistake and take full responsibility for it.”

What the Anti-Doping Process Could Mean

The International Tennis Integrity Agency is handling the matter, and the rules surrounding cocaine are clear: the substance is banned in competition. A suspension of up to four years is possible, though the final punishment is often less severe when the use is linked to time away from play rather than active tournament competition.

That kind of reduced sanction has precedent. British player Dan Evans, for example, received a one-year ban in 2017 after testing positive for cocaine at the Barcelona Open. Kyrgios’s case may follow a similar path depending on how the authorities weigh the circumstances.

The ITIA said Kyrgios’s sample was collected on June 22 and later confirmed positive on July 17, after he had already competed at Wimbledon. A mandatory provisional suspension began on August 4, and the agency said he has not appealed that step.

A Career Pause That Has Become Hard to Ignore

Kyrgios has not hidden how difficult the last few seasons have been. In his statement, he described feeling isolated and powerless at times, while making clear that his own mistake cannot be excused by the physical and emotional strain he has endured.

He also pointed to the disconnect between what his mind expects and what his body can deliver, a problem that has defined much of his recent career. Injuries have repeatedly interrupted his progress, and each attempted comeback has been followed by more setbacks.

His 2026 season has been especially thin, producing one singles victory against three losses. He did receive a Wimbledon doubles wild card last month alongside Alexander Bublik, but the partnership ended with a first-round defeat.

The broader decline has been steady. Kyrgios won his seventh career title in Washington, D.C., shortly after reaching the Wimbledon final in 2022, and then backed it up with a quarterfinal run at the US Open before losing to Karen Khachanov. Soon after, a knee injury in Tokyo in October 2022 changed the trajectory of everything that followed. He played only one match over the next two years, missed Wimbledon 2023 because of a wrist injury, and endured another bleak stretch in 2025 that began with a first-round exit at the Australian Open and ended with decisions to skip the next three Grand Slam tournaments.

Even so, Kyrgios ended his statement on a note of determination rather than farewell. He said the situation had given him a wake-up call and announced that he would step away from social media and public life for 28 days while focusing on getting himself back on track.
