Stevens Delivers Overtime Win in the Labor Day Showdown

Saskatchewan had to go beyond regulation to settle its latest clash with Winnipeg, but the Roughriders found the finish they needed and claimed a 32-26 overtime victory at Mosaic Stadium. The result capped a dramatic Labor Day Classic in front of a record 34,352 fans, the biggest CFL crowd ever at the venue.

Winnipeg nearly escaped with a tie at the end of regulation. With the final second gone, Zach Collaros fired a five-yard touchdown pass to Dorian Singer, forcing the game into extra time and setting up one more tense possession for each side.

Extra-Time Finish Turns the Game

Saskatchewan took control first in overtime. Tommy Stevens powered in from one yard out for his third touchdown of the day and his 15th rushing score of the season, then the Roughriders missed the two-point conversion that would have stretched the lead further.

The defense made that miss count. Winnipeg faced third-and-six from the Saskatchewan 31 and failed to move the chains, as Jameer Thurman brought down the receiver behind the line to secure the win.

Harris Guides the Offense and Enters Team History

Trevor Harris handled the passing workload for Saskatchewan, finishing 23 of 33 for 362 yards and one touchdown. He said the offense was slow to find its footing, but once the second quarter settled in, the group began to move the ball with much more confidence.

The quarterback also reached a major career milestone. A 72-yard throw to Daniel Wiebe in the second quarter moved him ahead of Doug Flutie into 10th place on the CFL’s all-time passing yards list, and Harris finished the night at 41,590 yards.

That mark leaves him behind Matt Dunigan’s 43,857 yards, while Anthony Calvillo still sits first all time with 79,816. Harris said the achievement reflected the help he has received from teammates and coaches throughout his career.

KeeSean Johnson added another personal achievement as well. He caught four passes for 32 yards, giving him more than 1,000 receiving yards for the second straight season and bringing his totals to 81 catches and 1,022 yards this year.

Injuries Open the Door for New Contributors

With Samuel Emilus and Kian Schaffer-Baker unavailable, Dhel Duncan-Busby stepped into a much bigger role and made it count. The third-year receiver grabbed 10 passes for 140 yards, both career highs, and several of his receptions came on crucial downs late in the fourth quarter.

On defense, Aubrey Miller Jr. made his first career start at linebacker and pointed to the offense for setting the tone early. Saskatchewan’s defense then finished the job, with Miller joining Derick Roberson and Seyi Oladipo in the sack column.

The unit also shut down Brady Oliveira, who entered with 956 rushing yards but managed only 28 yards on nine carries. Winnipeg’s offense never found enough room on the ground to take pressure off Collaros.

What the Score Sheet Showed

Collaros ended the night 27 of 40 for 279 yards and two touchdown passes, finding Kevens Clercius and Singer for scores. Saskatchewan also got a touchdown catch from Quali Conley and a safety from Roberson, while Sergio Castillo was perfect on four field-goal attempts for Winnipeg and Alex Hale made only one of three for the Roughriders.

The teams will meet again on Saturday, September 12, when the rivalry shifts to Winnipeg.
