Detroit, however, stayed composed and kept grinding. The Tigers ultimately scored the winning run in the ninth after an error by closer Louis Varland, turning a narrow game into a damaging defeat for Toronto.

For a team fighting for a postseason spot, that kind of loss cuts deeper than an ordinary regular-season result. It also matters that Cleveland remains directly ahead in the standings, which means Toronto cannot afford to keep giving away winnable games.

Pitching matters just as much. Soriano’s performance against Detroit was encouraging because it showed how a strong starter can keep the Blue Jays in control for most of a game, but the bullpen then has to finish the work.

Late mistakes become magnified in a race this tight. Toronto needs relievers who can protect slim leads, calm pressure-filled innings, and give the offense a chance to cash in on close games.

What Toronto Must Do Over the Next Six Games

The three-game set against Detroit is followed immediately by the three-game trip to Texas, so this stretch can easily define the direction of the Blue Jays’ season. It is not necessarily required that Toronto sweep, but the club does need to emerge from this run with real momentum.
