Canada Makes History, Advances to World Baseball Classic Quarterfinals to Face US

useruser—March 12, 20260

Canada has reached the World Baseball Classic (WBC) quarterfinals for the first time in the tournament’s 20-year history after a decisive 7–2 victory over Cuba on Wednesday. The win secured Canada’s place in the knockout stage and sets up a highly anticipated matchup against the United States on Friday in Houston.

The historic milestone marks a major step forward for Canadian baseball, as the national team had previously fallen short of the playoff round in every edition of the tournament since the inaugural event in 2006.

Canada Clinches Quarterfinal Spot with Strong Performance

Canada finished the group stage with a 3–1 record after defeating Cuba in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A pivotal three-run sixth inning proved to be the difference, with timely hitting and a series of Cuban defensive mistakes helping Canada pull away.

Bo Naylor sparked the rally with an RBI double before Otto Lopez followed with a two-run single, giving Canada the breathing room it needed to secure the victory.

On the mound, Cal Quantrill delivered an outstanding performance for Canada. The Port Hope, Ont., native allowed just two hits and one unearned run over five innings while striking out five batters. His effort earned him the win and placed him among a small group of Canadian pitchers to throw five innings in a WBC game.

Quantrill said representing Canada on the international stage was a special experience.

“It’s such an honour to represent your country and be part of this group,” he said after the game. “We knew we had a special team and we wanted to prove we belong on the international stage.”

Canada Wins Group A in WBC Tournament

Canada’s victory also secured the top spot in Group A, edging out Puerto Rico, which finished with the same 3–1 record. Cuba ended the tournament with a 2–2 mark and was eliminated in the first round.

The Canadians built their lead gradually throughout the game. Owen Caissie opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, and Abraham Toro extended the lead with a towering solo home run in the fifth.

Cuba briefly cut the deficit when Yoelkis Guibert drove in a run with a fielder’s choice. However, Canada responded with the decisive sixth-inning surge.

Additional insurance runs came late in the game as Josh Naylor added an RBI single in the eighth and Caissie drove in another run in the ninth.

Canada vs United States: Quarterfinal Showdown

Canada’s reward for its historic advancement is a quarterfinal clash with the United States in Houston at Daikin Park. The matchup carries extra significance, as Canada has not defeated the Americans in the tournament since an 8–6 victory during the inaugural 2006 WBC.

The United States secured its quarterfinal spot after Italy defeated Mexico 9–1 to claim first place in Group B. Italy had already upset the Americans 8–6 earlier in the tournament.

Canada manager Ernie Whitt said the team’s progress reflects years of growth in Canadian baseball.

“We’re extremely proud that we’re moving forward,” Whitt said. “It took us a long time to get here, but we have talented players and strong pitching. That’s what it takes to compete at this level.”

A Landmark Moment for Canadian Baseball

The quarterfinal appearance represents a breakthrough moment for Canada in international baseball. With a roster featuring emerging stars and experienced major leaguers, the team has demonstrated it can compete with the world’s best.

Now, Canada faces its biggest test yet as it prepares to take on the United States in a high-stakes elimination game.

For Canadian fans and players alike, the historic run has already made the 2026 World Baseball Classic one to remember.
