UEFA Draws a Line in Football’s Power Struggle

Leo GauthierLeo Gauthier—August 2, 20260

The dispute at the center of the game

Football’s latest showdown is not about a trophy or a transfer fee. It is about control, money, and who gets to shape the sport’s future.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has pushed a plan to sell minority stakes in the World Cup and other major FIFA properties to private investors, with reporting that the proposal centers on Thrive Eternal, the investment fund linked to Joshua Kushner. Infantino also set September 19 as the deadline for FIFA’s 211 member federations to signal support.

The reaction has been swift, and in some cases unusually blunt. UEFA, which speaks for 55 European federations, responded with a unanimous vote to oppose the plan and said the World Cup is not for sale. That language matters because UEFA represents many of the sport’s most commercially powerful leagues and clubs.

Who has pushed back so far

Governing body Position What stands out
UEFA Full opposition Unanimous vote; boycott threat if the plan continues
CONCACAF Rejected the proposal Cited a lack of transparency and a rushed timetable
AFC Backed the criticism Called for broader governance reform at FIFA
Mexico Undecided Says it needs more time to review the details

CONCACAF, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean, also rejected the idea and objected to the pace and secrecy surrounding it. The Asian Football Confederation went further than simple disagreement, warning that the situation should concern anyone who cares about the sport’s future and saying FIFA’s governance needs a serious overhaul.

Mexico has not taken a side yet, saying the federation wants more time to study the proposal before deciding. Africa, South America, and Oceania have not voted, and no timetable has been announced for them.

Why FIFA’s response is making the tension worse

FIFA has not signaled a retreat. In a Friday statement, the organization said incorrect media reports had disrupted its consultation process and indicated that it would continue moving forward.

That stance has only sharpened the conflict, especially because the backlash is not coming from the margins. UEFA’s members include the wealthiest leagues and most influential clubs in the world, so opposition from Europe, Asia, and North America gives the resistance serious weight.

The pressure inside FIFA has also become more visible. Carlos Cordeiro, one of Infantino’s senior advisers, resigned on Friday over the plan, which suggests the dispute is now affecting the organization’s own inner circle.

What happens next for the sport

The next few weeks may determine whether this remains a political standoff or turns into a real rupture. Infantino’s September 19 deadline is the first test, because he is asking federations to line up behind a proposal that already faces deep suspicion.

The second test arrives when the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup opens in Poland next month. If the unrest spills into that tournament, the conflict would move from boardroom politics into public disruption.

There is also a broader leadership question hanging over the fight. Infantino had been expected to secure a fourth term as FIFA president through 2031, with candidates due to declare by November 18 before a March vote in Rabat. After this week’s backlash, that path looks less certain than it did just days ago.
